Beware the Ides of April Tax Tips for Freelancing During Your Unemployment

Be careful the Ides of April Tax Tips for Freelancing During Your Unemployment Be careful the Ides of April Tax Tips for Freelancing During Your Unemployment Hoping to get provisional labor while you're searching for the following consistent check? Remember a couple of critical contrasts in how that salary is taxed. You're between full-time gigs and hoping to remain in the game - or possibly considering independent work as a more extended term business alternative. What do you have to know to plan for the following year's expense bill? The huge contrast between an all day occupation and independent work is that you've gotten a 1099 rather than a W-2. Full-time workers get a W-2 structure from their managers posting their wages and reasonings. Specialists and experts get a 1099 structure from their clients.Consultant salary will in general come in sporadic sprays. Monitor them and attempt to save 30 percent to 35 percent for your expense commitment; the amount you will be committed to pay will rely upon the amount you procure, derivations and different elements. It's agonizing to remove anything from a sporadic check, however it is less diff icult than attempting to discover the money in April to pay the single amount on a whole year's duty obligation. If you make under $600 from one boss, they're not committed to send you a 1099 toward the year's end, yet you're as yet liable for the assessments, so make certain to keep your own records.Read the IRS' independently employed page and its related structures cautiously. There are a ton of changes to independent work, a large number of which accompany exceptional prerequisites, advantages and remarkable structures to fill out.For occasion, there are unique rates for ranch work, fishing and work you accomplish for strict organizations.Self-business taxThe trickiest part is the independent work charge, which obviously flummoxed even Timothy Geithner, the previous CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and current secretary of the treasury, when he should be paying it. Luckily, the people at TurboTax - the product Geithner said he was utilizing at that point - have an expl anation.Basically, when you're utilized, you and your boss split the installments for Social Security and Medicare. At the point when you're independently employed, you pay the full cost, which separates into 12.4 percent for Social Security and 2.9 percent for Medicare. Basic? No. Be that as it may, you can deduct from your annual expense charge half of what you pay in independent work tax.And you should pay it quarterly, utilizing the sum you made during the past a quarter of a year to assess the amount you'll make during the entire year.Unemployment and occupation huntingUnemployment benefits are available, coincidentally, however not every one of them. The first $2,400 is all yours, however that is new for 2009. For the rest, you ought to have the joblessness office retain around 10 percent.Luckily, a significant part of the cash you're spending on work looking - for continue revamps, profession instructing and pursuit of employment administrations like Ladders - are deductible. So are transportation costs, stopping, tolls and other travel costs straightforwardly identified with your activity search. The primary concern? In the event that you have pay from a few sources and have gotten a 1099 after a profession as a W-2, and don't have any extraor dinary foundation or aptitudes in charge readiness, get as much a word of wisdom as possible on derivations and assessment sparing procedures. At that point get some expert assistance. At long last it will presumably be worth it.Don't neglect to keep the receipts and any correspondence that would help demonstrate the association, in the event that anybody with an IRS business card needs to talk with you about them.

You Cant Afford Not To Investigate Your Next Employer!

You Can’t Afford Not to Investigate Your Next Employer! “Office” by Julia Manzerova. What if you approached your next employer in the same way you would check out the health report of your favorite restaurant? When we job hunt, we mostly fixate on the position we’re trying to land.   We consider salary, advancement opportunities, healthcare benefits, and other employee perks when looking at our next employer. However, we can often go much deeper in the research of our potential employer.  The company you want to work for may not be a good fit for you. Imagine the joy of landing that job, starting work, and the horror of discovering you hate your new company. You could have a problem with way the business is run, or the company culture in general. In other words, after getting your foot in the door, you’re already looking for an exit. Taking the time to dig into the publicly available records of your next employer is a great way to avoid this scenario. Sometimes, you make discoveries you didn’t want to know about. Other times, there are things you have to know about. Extremely savvy consumers who want to know more about their favorite restaurants will often start with a health report. These reports are made available by state and local governments. Many counties have a convenient list of restaurants available with dated reports. The reports will often list if the restaurants are in compliance, out of compliance, and if the issue was resolved during the visit. (For an example of a local report, read Ardmore, PA’s Taste of Olives’ inspection.) Additionally, consumers who want to learn more about a particular restaurant can turn to review sites such as Zagat or Yelp for customer experiences. When researching a future employer you can tackle your research in a similar manner. The Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) is a good place to check out the health and safety compliance records of a company. You certainly don’t want to find yourself working for an employer in constant violation of the OSH Act. OHSA has an enforcement inspections database that is searchable by the name of establishments. You can search for employer violations, cases, and inspection dates across federal and state governments. Information is readily available, but it isn’t as easy to interpret as a restaurant health report. OSHA’s Integrated Management Information System is meant for in-house use, despite being publicly available. You can discover if an employer had any violations, if they were fined, and if there was an informal settlement. The number of violations may be concerning, or the complete lack of violations could put you at ease. Just like a restaurant report, an OS HA report is only a snapshot of a company during a specific time. Job review sites such as Vault or the more popular Glassdoor are a great place to get an idea of a company’s culture, directly from employees. Glassdoor was founded in 2007 and currently has a database of over 6 million detailed company reviews. The reviews cover everything from interview reviews and questions, salary reports, benefits reviews, CEO approval ratings, and even employee recommendations on how the company can improve. Searching for a particular company is as easy as entering a name. Reviewers range from entry-level employees, all the way to up to senior management. The interview reviews provide some insight on the hiring process. Glassdoor is a great way to gather information about an employer. A company with lots of subpar reviews or a confusing interview process may be noteworthy. [click to Tweet this article:  http://ctt.ec/10yw4]   The major downside to Glassdoor is the inability to sort out review by location and career position. For example, you may want reviews from IT Project Managers for Comcast based in Philadelphia. A search of Comcast with those terms yields general reviews of the company from employees in a variety of positions, in numerous locations across the country. There’s no way to hone in on those specific search terms, forcing you to read reviews from similar positions. There are also a lot of anonymous reviews on Glassdoor that tell you very little about a job position. All and all, Glassdoor is still a good resource for researching companies. Another great way to check out an employer is by word of mouth. Think about it. You would definitely ask your friends about a restaurant you were curious about. In the same way, your friends, social networks, and even networking events can help you determine if a company would be a good match. Don’t be afraid to ask contacts on LinkedIn about a company’s culture. Be sure to ask about company culture from employees at networking events. Facebook posts and tweets make it very easy to get the “word on the street.” Try it for one of your target companies. Often these social inquiries generate leads and introductions without you having to outright ask. Doing extra research on the front end provides another bonus in your job hunt. If you discover the company is a good match, you will be able to fine tune your marketing efforts. You’ll know enough about the company to hit their hot buttons and land an interview directly with a hiring manager. That’s a huge advantage over your competition! Researching an employer in the same way you might scope out your favorite restaurant isn’t easy. Searching for work place reports and employee reviews can be a daunting task.  A little work goes a long way in finding out if a company would be a good a fit for you. When taking your career to the next level you want to know as much as possible about your next employer. A combination of compliance information and employee-driven reviews will help to ensure you don’t regret getting the job. The mental stress, depression, and overall frustration resulting from a bad match with an employer can be detrimental to your wellbeing. On the flipside, fully researching a company and discovering they are a good match can help your chances of being hired. Much of what you find out can help you more effectively market yourself to meet their needs. In short, you can’t afford to not thoroughly research a company. In the PR world, for example, there's the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) or The PR Council. Pledge drives have The Association of Fundraising Professionals, and somebody in IT could join the Association of Information Technology Professionals. Most fields have various associations a national gathering (or now and then more than one), local gatherings, etc. Not exclusively will you approach top industry news, yet additionally to the individuals impacting that news. Another alternative is to tune in to class addresses online through Apple's iTunes U. Check out the workplace and see what your associates are taking a shot at. Are there tasks or issues you're keen on getting familiar with? Ask another colleague or division on the off chance that you could assist on a task or even shadow somebody for a day. For example, suppose you're entrusted with composing blog entries, however the showcasing group is liable for getting them out into the world. You can become familiar with SEO and online networking for nothing!- just by plunking down with a colleague over espresso or lunch. 6. At that point we did it again for International Womens Day 2017, welcoming young ladies to get notification from moving speakers speaking to a scope of Debut organizations. What's more, this previous Wednesday (fifteenth November), we did it for a third time with our enormous The Future is Female occasion. This time the best and most brilliant Debutants originated from great distances abroad to get very close with senior ladies from the absolute greatest universal firms. Spoken to were EY, Shell and BT a show-taking line up for an exceptionally significant night. Families and opportunity First up on the plan was an improving board conversation about the more extensive issue of sex uniformity in the realm of work. The board of specialists had bounty to state about these issues, however one territory evoked an emotional response from the crowd especially the issue of having kids and proceeding to work. While the entirety of our board concurred that its an absolute necessity to permit flexi-time for eager and unseasoned parents, they also mentioned that the individuals who settle on the similarly valiant decision to not possess youngsters should make energy for their interests outside of work. Only one bit of the stunning understanding that was on offer all through the night. Loaning some assistance The board additionally examined regular obstacles looked by ladies in their professions and how they figured out how to defeat them. Each organization had a scope of activities to battle working environment sexism, including womens gatherings and assets to enable female business people to fabricate their organizations. The board additionally talked about the significance of having coaches whether male or female to help them expertly and how to wave off harmful individuals from the working environment. The specialists additionally took numerous insightful inquiries from the crowd now, talking about bullheadedness in the working environment and how to tackle work environment clashes valuably. Rivalry time! It wouldnt be a Debut occasion without a tad of well disposed rivalry presently, would it? This time, the coding challenge came back to test our young Debutants aptitudes. The test? To interpret a mystery message and uncover a covered up passphrase that would procure whoever shouted it a one-on-one with an organization of their decision. Four minutes passed by before we heard a cry of Carpe Diem! as Cat Laird won. We looked up with Cat up some other time at night to discover how she had discovered the occasion: Grins all round At long last, the specialists, additional selection representatives and graduates utilized by each of the four organizations stayed for systems administration. Surrounding us young ladies were getting a handle on the chance to converse with those aware of everything about their possibilities, all anxious to learn and pick the specialists minds. This time around we changed things up and set up the systems administration round-table style, to permit everybody to have abundant, significant time with our going to organizations. It appeared to go down a treat. Wine streamed, pizza was jeered and soon it was the fun, laid-back environment that Debut has gotten known for. Understudies love our Debut occasions since they furnish them with circumstances they wouldnt in any case approach; and we love our Debut occasions since we get the opportunity to meet the up and coming age of trailblazers, pioneers and business visionaries. In a world that can show up very dreary now and again, particularly concerning sexual orientation equity and sexism, its so promising to see ladies bolster and empower each other across ages. Its inspiring, as well, to see all these young ladies assume control over their profession fate. Without a doubt we were taking a gander at the following rush of pioneers and coaches. So from Debuts point of view, what's to come is splendid. What's to come is female. Interface with Debut on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn for more vocations bits of knowledge.

I am a dreamer and yes, an optimist, and still believe the Society does many important things, including training and keeping us informed on legislative changes. Johnny Taylor could be the first SHRM CEO in a long time to really get things done if we make a few adjustments.” Robin has chosen not to renew her SHRM membership while Mark has decided to work on the inside. Today I’m interviewing both Robin and Mark to get a perspective on the controversy from both sides. Whats the Deal with SHRM? In this episode, we discuss the SHRM controversy. Why is this happening now? Is it all about the picture of SHRM CEO Johnny Taylor with President Donald Trump or does it go back further?   Im long-time friends with both Mark and Robin and I value their friendship and opinions. This is a sensitive topic that has ended relationships. I appreciate their willingness to discuss openly their thoughts, feelings, and opinions. I wanted to set outside of things and hear from two different sides about their points of view. While their opinions are their own, I do think that both Robin and Mark offer great insights into the polarization that is happening within the HR community right now. There are rifts developing in our industry and I believe they are hurting the opportunity for members to connect, engage, and learn from each other. And this conflict is not unlike the political polarization that is happening in our lives and workplaces right now. They (SHRM) try to be everything to everybody. And you know ultimately theres no way theyre going to please all three thousand members. - @robinschooling #shrm #hr #fixitshrm Click To Tweet What Most SHRM Members Dont Understand Both Robin and Mark have been in the industry and have been involved in SHRM locally and nationally for a long time and as influencers in the HR industry, they also have a unique point of view getting access and exposure to the inter-workings of the SHRM itself. For those HR influencers in attendance at the SHRM Annual Conference this year, we were able to meet with and talk to Johnny in the HR bloggers lounge. Mark touches on the experience in the podcast interview and if the disagreements and the #FixitSHRM movement was addressed. Were not always going to agree. The problem is when not agreeing leads to actions that people feel are detrimental to the HR community. This is a polarizing conversation. - @hc3 #shrm #hr #fixitshrm Click To Tweet Robin shares that more than anything she wants to have a dialogue with SHRM and a place where those who are disenchanted can be heard. I agree with Robins recommendation, and Id love to see SHRM host open forums or town halls where HR practitioners can connect with the SHRM leadership online or in person to ask questions, learn more about SHRMs plans and strategies both political and otherwise for the future. This needs to happen in a way that is accessible to everyone and not those that are volunteer leaders or have the financial means to travel to Washington DC or conferences. Mark shares about his decision to stay a SHRM member and his decision to work to help and influence from the inside. Mark is an instructor and teaches SHRM certification courses including at Workology and is very involved at a national level as a speaker and in his HR consultancy. Robin says that most SHRM members dont understand how political the SHRM organization really is and their involvement not just with the current Presidential administration but their alliance with the Koch Brothers is not in alignment with her own beliefs and opinions which is one of the main reasons for not renewing her membership. You need to listen to the full interview. My intent was to create a balanced podcast conversation where both sides are heard. This podcast isnt just for SHRM members and HR leaders but also for the current leadership at SHRM themselves. Yes, Im talking directly to you (yes you) at SHRM. I hope SHRM listens to the podcast and make plans to meet with members of the HR community to openly talk and listen to each other. This doesnt mean that SHRM will change its alliances or involvements with different programs and affiliations, but its a start in the right direction for everyone. Conclusion Every industry has its ups and downs with regards to member organizations, however, human resources is unique in that it is a sector of professionals that isn’t industry-specific. Educationally and historically, organizations offering certification in the HR field have a great deal of power and they are self-regulated. The collective voice can be just as powerful. I appreciate Robin and Mark discussing the SHRM debate with me today. I am very interested to see how SHRM will be involved in the upcoming presidential election. This isn’t the last of the conversation on this topic, but I hope that it helps facilitate discussion and conversation among those within our HR community. 3 Executive Cover Letter Tips that WIN Interviews!

3 Executive Cover Letter Tips that WIN Interviews! Did you know that your cover letter (in the hands of a key decision maker) determines whether or not your resume gets read at all? Cover letters are so critically important to making the right first impression; you just can’t afford to go wrong here. It can be tempting to want to skimp on really making sure your cover letter shines if you are applying for multiple jobs each week. But the good news is there are some really powerful tips I am going to share with you that will make this task efficient and highly effective! These are the same tips I apply to my clients’ cover letters â€" letters that secure them multiple interviews! Here are several ways to easily get started crafting highly compelling cover letters that get great results: Tip #1 Shorter is Better I know a career consultant who writes cover letters for 500k+ executives who never uses more than 100 power-hitting words. I fell in love with this technique the moment I heard of it. It makes total sense! Here’s how to do it: Write your letter, then come back in a couple of hours and take out all of the superfluous words and phrases you find. Next, highlight all of your BEST words and phrases (you will probably have a few to add or reword at this point). Finally, revisit your letter in an hour and edit any erroneous words just one more time. Now you are left with a tight, crystal clear letter, brimming with power hitting terminology! You won’t have to do this with every cover letter you write. After you practice this technique a few times, you will quickly learn to get it right the first time! Tip #2 Simplify Your Language Want to know the mark of a really good cover letter? Give it to someone to read who is in another industry. If they are impressed by your accomplishments and can understand what you are communicating, this is a really good sign you have an effective letter! Specifically, your letter should be understandable by someone not directly linked to your position of interest. It should be simple and clearly outline your accomplishments. A big mistake I often see in executive level cover letters is a string of hundred dollar words in a sentence. Check your letter and remove any strings of “eye-glazers” as I like to call them. You will be amazed how this will lighten and brighten up your letter instantly. Tip #3 Be Focused and Clear You must know why you are writing what you are writing. Either you are writing a general value proposition about your strengths and achievements in a particular role (CEO/COO/VP of Operations etc.) or you are responding to a job opening. In either case, you want to be completely focused on communicating your maximum value. If you shine in two key areas, write about them and remember to finish your statements with examples of results you have obtained. If you can add a % or $ to those results, that is preferable. If you are responding to an actual job description, the most important thing you can do is highlight all of the key words and phrases in that job description that you match and parrot those key words and phrases back in your cover letter. If you have ever written a job description, you know just how maddening it is to read through a stack of cover letters that mention little, if anything that matches what you are looking for! A resume attached to a cover letter such as this rarely gets read. Using these three simple, yet powerful tips will help increase companies’ interest in you as you confidently set the tone and pace for leadership and control so you can secure more interviews!     Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)

Blind Spots 10 Business Myths by Alexandra Levit

Blind Spots 10 Business Myths by Alexandra Levit One of my favorite career/business authors has done it again!  Alexandra Levit , who I met over dinner in Chicago, is releasing her newest book today: Blind Spots: 10 Business Myths You Cant Afford to Believe on Your New Path to Success I got a chance to interview Alexandra here are my questions and her responses: What is the premise of Blind Spots? The recent recession has toppled and transformed our ideas about just about everything. Massive change is afoot and many of us are still reeling from the work-force bloodletting that began three years ago and the downfall of companies we thought we all respected. If we take the time to examine the world that’s rising out of the ashes, we see that a major paradigm shift is occurring. We have realized that money and manipulation will only go so far, and we’ve come 180 degrees from the backbiting and dirty politics that characterized the dog-eat-dog 1980s. Inside the business world, organizations and individuals are looking inward and seeking a return to traditional human values like honesty, trust, moderation, open communication, and one-on-one relationship building. Those who wish to be gainfully employed for the foreseeable future must take this transformation seriously and adapt new ways of doing things. In this book, we explore the 10 biggest myths of business success that people believe to be true even though they dont work for 98 percent of all truly successful people. The time to debunk these myths is now because they are more dangerous and less viable than ever given this post-recessionary climate of ethical scrutiny and intense competition. If adhering to these myths didnt get you places before, it really wont today, when employers want to hire people with Puritan work ethics, people who want to do their jobs well without rocking the boat too much and who are strong representatives of the organization’s culture. If you want to get ahead in this values-driven environment, putting on blinders is not an option and you cant afford to waste time. You must throw away these myths, determine what will work in their place, and immediately put it to use. What makes Blind Spots different from other career books? I wrote Blind Spots because I was tired of reading silly theories and platitudes dispensed by business and career authors who sell their work by giving these myths credibility and by telling readers what they want to hear. Here is one thing you can count on: I will tell it like it is. I will be honest with you about what will render you successful in today’s business world, not yesterday’s. I refuse to give you overly provocative advice that hasn’t worked for anyone I know, like quitting your job tomorrow and starting your own business the next day, or marching into your boss’ office and announcing that he should appreciate your individuality. This advice is not trendy and its not hype its what actually works. What do you hope readers will take away from Blind Spots? Each chapter includes academic research, expert commentary, anecdotes from contemporary culture, and inspirational stories from people like you who either fell prey to a myth or had to rethink their approach, or who recognized the myth for what it was and consequently came out on top. Along the way, I’ll provide specific advice for course-correcting that readers can use immediately in their work lives. I hope that by the time they finish reading, they realize that a lot of what it takes to be successful is already a part of who they are, and that they absolutely have the power to cultivate the skills and attitude that will take them wherever they want to go. Whats your favorite myth and why? I have personally experienced most of the books myths myself, so they are all favorites in a way. But overnight success is the first myth I debunk in the book because it’s one of the most widely held beliefs. It’s also hugely misleading, and adopting this idea that you can easily become an overnight success could actually be quite damaging for your career and life. The truth is simple. There are very few â€" if any â€" genuine cases of overnight success. The majority of successful people have dedicated themselves to a goal and persevered for a long time, experiencing several setbacks before reaching a high level of achievement that is finally noticed and talked about by others. Sounds awesome, right?  I love Alexandras writing style and am anxious to see her new book Blind Spots 10 Business Myths by Alexandra Levit One of my favorite career/business authors has done it again! 4 Ways to Find Passionate Talent

4 Ways to Find Passionate Talent In the movie  Serendipity, Dean says to Jonathan: “You know the Greeks didnt write obituaries. They only asked one question after a man dies: ‘Did he have passion?’” In my experience as a hiring manager, I look for individuals who possess passion for their work. This is crucial to help ensure a right match is not only made for the job but for the organization’s culture as well. Today, there are a number of avenues hiring managers can leverage to learn about and evaluate job seekers. When doing so, I look at four major areas for signs of passion: Resume History: I review the job candidate’s history to see what they’ve done and what they’re doing, looking for patterns of activity that indicate increasing roles and responsibilities. While these may not directly indicate passion, they reflect stability and a predictable career path. If the career path doesn’t look normal, I look for indications of why their occupation took a left turn. Activities: I look for activity outside of the office that support continuing education â€" specifically the pursuit of advanced degrees and certifications. Achievements: It’s important to look for awards and other achievements, indicating how they have excelled, specifically individual, leadership and industry-specific awards.   Social media Profile:  On social profiles that reflect an individual’s occupation, I look for indications of pride. For example, on LinkedIn I would look for awards, speaking engagements or promotions. Engagement: Passion can be seen in what they share about their vocation. Individuals who share information, articles and news that relate to their job stand out as potential experts in their field. Groups: Participating in  social media groups  affiliated with their field shows that theyre interested in learning and sharing knowledge with their peers. Online Activities: Blogging activities (whether they manage their own or participate in other occupational-related blogs) reflect a deeper connection to their chosen profession. The extra time spent by these individuals may demonstrate a dedication to their field. Interview Presentation: I look for a candidate who presents themselves in a  confident and energetic manner  â€" proud of their skills, experience and accomplishments. Involvement: Individuals who employ their skills outside of the office may reflect passion. Advancing their understanding through self-study, reading and hobbies, as well as utilizing their skills in volunteer or community activity may reflect that a job is more than just a paycheck. Reference checks Professional contacts: I listen to what former employers say about a candidate’s work product and work ethic for signs of passion and dedication. Personal contacts: Personal references can be valuable as they may offer a more candid look into a job candidate’s interests and background. Personal references have the ability to reveal a candidate’s passion from their everyday life outside of the office. While these areas are not absolute for finding passionate talent, they may narrow the field to those candidates who you should consider for the job. What do you look and listen for to judge a job seeker’s passion? Let us know in the comments below. Rich Weede  is responsible for Marketing at Kforce.
